What To Wear To An Interview

DRESSING FOR SUCCESS

EVERYONE

The first impression you make is crucial. The interviewer will notice your appearance, speech, and personality. Whether you like it our not, every detail about you will be evaluated.

The interviewer's initial perception of you can shape the outcome of your interview. Subconscious things such as your facial expressions, mannerisms, as well as your overall physical appearance form perceptions. Therefore, you should choose traditional, conservative, business-like styles of attire for the interview.

Your attire should convey an image of credibility, confidence, and professionalism.

Dress according to the position for which you are applying, just one notch higher. If you are seeking a position in a law firm, dress very conservatively. If it is a creative firm, you could dress a little trendier. If it is for an industrial position, wear clean slacks, shirt (not a t-shirt), and closed toed shoes (a plant tour may be part of the interview process).

WOMEN

For best results, wear a dark blue, black or grey suit. It should be tailored, not faddish, and not manly looking (do not wear a tie). Your blouse should be tailored--and not low cut. Pump-style shoes should be medium to high heel (no higher than 2-1/2") and be polished. Never wear open-toed shoes or sandals with a suit. You can carry a small matching handbag with you. Always wear neutral-colored nylons that do not have any patterns or designs to distract the interviewer.

Be sure to check all of your clothing prior to leaving for the interview. It should be clean and pressed. Be sure to check for any tears, loose buttons, spots, or anything else that might distract the interviewer or make you feel self-conscious.

Light jewelry should match the outfit that you are wearing. Heavy jewelry such as pins or large earrings, tongue studs, body piercings' and lots of rings on are distracting to the interviewer and should not be worn.

Your hair and make-up are also very important. Hair should be smoothly styled- not faddish. It should look professionally done. Long hair should be pulled back so you don't distract from your face. Make-up should be light and look professional.

Be sure to also check your nails. They should be short to medium length (especially if you are applying for a secretarial position). If you are wearing nail polish, the color should be neutral or muted.

MEN

Men should wear a dark blue or grey suit. Studies have shown that wearing a brown or plaid suit illicit a negative response from the interviewer.

Be sure to wear a crisp shirt, preferably white, with a conservative tie (do not wear a bow tie). The shirt should be long-sleeve, even in summer. This will give you a more finished look. Your shoes should be a dark leather, lace-up or slip-on style, with low heels (and be sure they are polished!). Loafers or suede styles are too casual. Also do not wear brown dress shoes with a dark blue or black suit. Wear black shoes with socks that go over the calf so your leg won't show if you cross your legs.

Be sure your hair is clean and neatly styled. Avoid long hair.

Do not wear turtlenecks, trench coats, large belt buckles, argyle socks, or any jewelry other than a watch or wedding ring. Do not wear an earring, tongue stud or other visible body piercings'.

Be sure to check all of your clothing prior to leaving for the interview. It should be clean and pressed. Be sure to check for any tears, loose buttons, spots, or anything else that might distract the interviewer or make you feel self-conscious.
